Idol Politics

I truly struggle with this.

It's so easy to get caught up in the emotions and furor over injustice and perceived injustice and what God would have us do. And even in doing what we think God would have us do, we neglect doing it in the way God would have us do it.

I don't know about other countries, but in the United States, the love of politics is a glaring idol.

It's a big fat pimple on our faces, obscuring the reflection of God's image.

Political discourse in this country has become so uncivilized. Too many people talking and not enough people listening to anyone other than their own mirror image.

Too many people defending in their political allies the very things that would outrage them in their political opponents. Too many people noticing even this in others, and not in themselves.

In all these things, Christians are far from immune. Far from being transformed.

When we conveniently forget about how Christ would respond or what God has told us is good... When instead we get caught up in the anger, the furor, the hatred, the ungodly attitudes, and the shouting over each other...

When we see the log of hypocrisy on the other side and not the very speck that obscures our own vision...

Oh God, forgive me. Help me to be different.

Help us all to act justly. To love mercy. To walk humbly.

And to reflect Your healing, loving image.
